Kathmandu
Nepal’s largest city and capital, Kathmandu is chaotic, dusty and diverse. On a one day layover, we saw four of the city’s most significant sites.
Swayambhunath
Also known as Monkey Temple, this complex consisting a blend of Buddhist and Hindu shrines and temples sits on top of a hill overlooking the city.
Durbar Square
A historical site with royal palaces and religious temples, most buildings were severely damaged in the 2015 earthquake. Many were undergoing reconstruction while we were there.
Bouddhanath
The Boudha Stupa is one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world and is particularly significant for many Tibetans. In Nepal, the stupas have Buddha eyes on all four sides of the tower. They symbolise the omniscience of Buddha.
Pasupatinath TemplE
A sacred temple complex only Hindus can enter. However, anyone can observe the cremation ceremonies from across the Bagmati river.
