Rotterdam

When people think of the Netherlands, they think of Amsterdam. But Rotterdam, the second largest city in the country, is very different. While Amsterdam is historic and packed with canals, Rotterdam is modern with plenty of cool architecture. This port city was heavily bombed in World War II and most of the city centre had to be rebuilt. The Cube Houses and the Markthal—an arch of apartments and offices overlooking a large food hall—are some of the notable buildings we visited. At night we stayed in one of the towers of the newly built De Rotterdam building with a view of the Erasmusbrug, a bridge that has become a symbol of the city.
